About

Sowbona (Hello) everyone! My name is Chloe and I am a 22 year old student from the United States who has recently moved to South Africa to conduct research with African elephants. Since I was a little a girl, I was obsessed with animals and knew they would become my life. I went to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to become a veterinarian, but little did I know life had other plans for me. I fell in love with research and wildlife and decided to live a life full of adventure. I was given the opportunity of a lifetime, after I graduated, to work as the Endocrinologist intern at Disney World’s Animal Kingdom. There I helped fellow scientists conduct non-invasive hormone monitoring on our animals so we could see how they were feeling. I was able to impact so many animals lives by just playing with their poop (trust me there is a lot more fancy science that goes into hormone monitoring and the samples you get are not always the most glamorous)! This experience was life changing and I knew I had found my true calling. The next thing I know, my fellow lab mate and friend Macie is telling me that she has found my destiny, all conveniently packaged in a Facebook post. There was a posting from the University of Pretoria in South Africa looking for a masters student to conduct research on elephants (literally my favorite animal besides a sloth) studying….you guessed it, poop hormones! Well its a little more complicated than that, but long story short, I applied and was so blessed to be accepted. It was quite a bumpy road, but I finally made it to the promise land and am so excited to begin my studies. I wonder what crazy adventure I’ll have next?
